Acai is a fruit from Brazil, dark purple in color and is full of antioxidants that protect cells from free radicals (harmful molecules) and can help against diseases. Most berry type fruit have these properties, so what makes acai different? My research is inconclusive as it seems as a weight loss solution the hype outweighs the science. The research is lacking and even celebrity slimmers such as Oprah Winfey posted on her website disassociating herself with acai products and their claims.

Essentially as a fruit thee acai berry is full of antioxidants which can help against diseases. Strawberries and blueberries do too, but no claims are made about their ability to cleanse the body and speed up metabolism as the acai berry does. As a weight loss solution the hype outweighs the science. Even celebrity slimmer Oprah Winfey posted on her website disassociating herself with acai products and their claims.

“There is not any single food, including the super-healthy acai berry, that can provide the solution to weight loss. To lose weight, you need to control calories with a healthy lifestyle approach that includes plenty of physical activity, nutritious foods, and adequate rest.” Compelling testament to support that it really isn’t the magical fruit that will slim you.

There are loads of different acai berry diets that promise quick weight loss such as “450% more weight loss than dieting and exercise alone and “20 pounds in one week!” However there are no single “acai berry diet” on the market. Instead, you’ll find advertisements for products such as “acai berry detox,” “acai burn,” “acai pure” and “acai berry edge,” promising quick weight loss.

How the acai berry is supposed to work is it burns fat more efficiently by processing food more quickly. It works to cut down on cravings and boost your metabolism. There’s further claims that it will cleanse the body of fat and rid the body of toxins.

According to some web sites selling acai products, acai’s fiber and essential fatty acid content contribute to its ability to “burn fat more efficiently, process food more quickly, cut down on cravings, and boost metabolism.” Detox acai products further promise to “cleanse” your system of fat and rid your body of “toxic buildup that is weighing you down.”

There has also been warnings about websites that look like official medical or news based websites to give the illusion that they are ‘certified’ or have ‘official’ backing. Truth is, they do not.

It’s best advice to heed caution when attempting to find any quick fix solution for weight loss. If there was a magic pill or magic fruit that cause weight loss then everyone who was overweight wouldn’t be. Common sense is needed.

However, slimmers are so desperate to achieve their weight loss goals, they will try anything, knowing that other things have failed in the past, they move from product to product in an attempt to find that one thing that will work.

Also mindful eating practices where you learn to eat slowly with 100% full attention given to your meal can help you to become aware of the sensation of fullness sooner. Weight loss starts in the mind. Change the mind and the way you think about weight loss. Ditch the quick fix as it shouldn’t be a race. It should be a lifestyle change. Change the attitudes, behaviors and beliefs of a person is a good place to start when considering making a change.

Acai berry is a healthy part of any diet, but it is not a weight loss cure. Fact is that a healthy diet, with a variety of fresh, raw foods and exercise combined with a healthy attitude, motivation, energy and self image are the only way to have healthy weight loss that will last.
